The opportunity

Germany needs experienced professional drivers

Germany’s transport and logistics industry has a long-term need for qualified truck drivers.

We connect experienced South African Code 14 / EC drivers with established German employers offering long-term career opportunities.

South Africa is particularly well suited to this pathway. Many drivers already have substantial professional heavy-vehicle experience, and South African driving licences have a favourable route for conversion under German driving licence rules.

However, your South African licence alone does not mean you can immediately work commercially in Germany.

Before full professional deployment, the correct immigration, licence conversion and professional driver qualification requirements must be completed.

We coordinate that journey with you — from initial assessment through to working as a professional driver in Germany.

Who we are

Who is behind Drive Germany?

Drive Germany is operated by KML Personal, a German recruitment company specialising in the recruitment, preparation and integration of international skilled workers.

For more than 12 years, we have supported employers and international candidates through complex recruitment projects involving language training, immigration, qualification, relocation and integration in Germany.

Successful international recruitment requires close cooperation between everyone involved. We work with selected German employers, public authorities, training providers and industry associations to coordinate the different parts of the process.

Our role is to connect these parties and guide candidates through the entire journey — from recruitment and preparation in South Africa to qualification, relocation and integration in Germany.

Our objective is long-term integration — not short-term placement.

OUR APPROACH

Recruitment works best when employers, authorities and industry work together.

Who can apply

Do you meet the minimum requirements?

Beyond documents

What KML looks at

Particular attention is given to years of professional driving experience, the types of trucks driven, long-distance or regional experience, accident and employment history, reliability, willingness to learn, adaptability, and realistic expectations about life in Germany.

Know your original first issue date

The date on which you first obtained your heavy vehicle licence can be important under German professional driver qualification rules.

How the programme works

A structured process, from application to professional deployment

Relocating to Germany as a professional truck driver requires careful coordination. Each stage is designed to clarify suitability, protect expectations and prepare candidates for a stable career transition.

01 · Online application

The candidate completes the KML application and provides initial information about driving experience and qualifications.

02 · Pre-screening

KML reviews the driving licence, PrDP, professional experience, employment history, eligibility, motivation and language-learning commitment.

03 · Interview and assessment

Suitable applicants are invited for an interview and, where required, further driving or professional assessment.

04 · German employer interview

Successful candidates are introduced to a German employer. The German employer makes the final employment decision.

05 · Employment offer and programme acceptance

If selected, the candidate receives the relevant employment and programme documentation. All costs, responsibilities and programme conditions are explained before the candidate commits.

06 · German language preparation

Candidates begin structured German language training. Language preparation may begin while immigration documents are being prepared.

07 · Immigration and document preparation

KML and specialist partners coordinate employment documentation, immigration documents, visa preparation, licence documentation, translations, police clearance and qualification planning.

08 · Visa approval and relocation

Once the necessary approval has been obtained, travel to Germany is organised.

09 · Arrival and onboarding in Germany

Support can include registration of residence, health insurance, bank account, tax registration, accommodation coordination, orientation and continued German lessons.

10 · German driver qualification

Depending on the individual route, this can include South African licence conversion, medical and eyesight examinations, professional driver qualification, 35-hour periodic training where applicable, accelerated qualification, a Driver Qualification Card and a digital tachograph driver card.

11 · Full professional deployment

Once all legal requirements are fulfilled, the employee can be deployed fully as a professional truck driver.

Language training continues throughout the transition, including after arrival.

German language training

German is part of the programme

You do not need to speak fluent German before applying. You do need to be genuinely willing to learn it. Depending on your individual qualification route, the required German level before relocation may vary.

Some professional qualification examinations can now be completed in English, which can make the process easier for South African drivers. Nevertheless, learning German remains essential.

You will need German for your workplace, safety instructions, colleagues, customers, authorities, doctors, shopping, housing, everyday life and long-term integration.

The practical reality

ENGLISH MAY HELP YOU QUALIFY. GERMAN HELPS YOU BUILD A LIFE.

Working and living in Germany

This is more than a job abroad

Relocating to Germany is a major life decision. Germany offers stable employment, strong worker protection, social insurance, healthcare and the opportunity to build a long-term future.

But Germany will also be different from South Africa. We want applicants to make an informed decision, not simply chase short-term truck driving jobs in Germany.

Be prepared for a real change

Learning a new language, colder winters, a different workplace culture, strict transport and safety regulations, punctuality, different housing, German administration and — in some cases — initially living away from family.

Our objective is not to bring somebody to Germany for six months. Our objective is successful long-term employment and integration.
